Happy Sunday everybody! Today, I want to talk about people’s Characters. I’ve already written various types of posts that are aimed at reflecting on building one’s character and felt the need to continue writing on this point. In life, you will encounter various types of people/personalities and/or situations that will test your true character. If you think you know yourself and know how you are as a person right now, you could be kidding yourself right about now because your true character or personality usually manifests itself during a trial or crisis. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you always need to face a trial to test your character, but what I am saying is that sometimes we think we know who we are until we face a crisis and then we find out how we really are. It’s nothing to be ashamed of because everybody slips up in some way but this is where we have to identify our weaknesses and learn to admit our faults and failures and work on our weaknesses and turn those weaknesses into strengths.
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
Some people operate with an “I’m going to fake it to make it” philosophy, but they are only fooling themselves. The key is to identify your weaknesses. If you claim to have no weaknesses then “kudos to you buddy”, you have mastered the art of self-deception. Every person has a weakness, and some people may appear to have no weakness at all because they have mastered the art of SELF-CONTROL. However, you can only master the art of self-control by confronting your weaknesses by being real with yourself. Recognize the areas in your life that you are lacking and work on progressively developing self-control and discipline in order to strengthen your mind for every battle that you face in this life. The reason why some people face the same test(s) over and over again is because they did not learn from their mistakes from the first failure.
Life is like running an Olympic race with many hurdles. To get the highest marks in such a race, you have to attempt to jump over each hurdle seamlessly without tipping any of them over. If you tip any over while you’re running, you’ll lose points even if you get to the finish line first, so it is not enough to simply finish the race, you have to be seamless in the long run. In order to finish such a race, you have to practice jumping over these hurdles over and over again until you become a seamless runner which means you require training. This example is like with everything else you do in life; building self-control requires repetition until having self-control is like second nature to you. It’s easy to lose your cool in the heat of the moment, but building self-control requires perseverance and the aptitude to work on your attitude to maintain your integrity no matter what obstacle, battle or offense that you may face. You will face the same test of offenses until you pass with an attitude of self-control. Solutions to a crisis can only come to your head when you maintain your cool to think rationally, with a calm disposition. No one, including God, can talk to a “hot-head” who is full of “I know already!” when trying to help you overcome a crisis, difficulty and/or test. This is where humility is key.
[ I Never Knew You ] “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Sometimes, the teachers God gives us may offend us because He wants to groom our characters to be teachable and obedient to instructions. In some churches, you will find people seeking a “prophetic word” for themselves because they just want a prophetic word to get by and by, but the question I have for such seekers of the prophetic word are, “Will you be obedient to do what is instructed, once the instructions have been given?”. Some people call on the Lord Lord, but how many are willing to do what He says?
[ Build on the Rock ] “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
God gives us ideas through many forms of inspiration, whether it be by a dream, or a thought that seemingly “pops” into your head, or through your gifts that birth amazing ideas to create things because we are all born gifted in one form or another because we are fearfully and wonderfully made and your soul should know this very well (Psalm 139:14). With God, all things become possible to those that believe because He is limitless.
But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
In order to succeed in whatever it is you want to do in life, you have to confront your true self. You have to confront your personal issues that you have not dealt with and you have to decide that you want an attitude adjustment to handle any vicissitude you may face in this life. Donald Trump has faced many bankruptcies as a business man and yet nothing stopped him from being a multi-millionaire and on top of that being elected as the next American President of the United States. Although I’m not American and I don’t really have any comment on their political issues, I just want you all to bear in mind that Trump is just an example of what a winning attitude looks like. He may not be the best person in the world, but He clearly has the emotional intelligence to deal with people’s criticisms and yet remain successful in all that he does no matter how many haters he may have. When you operate at such a high level of fortitude, you will attract many haters and people that will want to see you fail in your life. This is why it is important to also develop emotional intelligence. When you develop emotional intelligence, you can withstand any obstacle or setback that comes your way and you will always have a different picture and perspective about how you see yourself in light of any circumstances.
I feel like with all that I’ve been through with therapy and dealing with the sickness I’ve had to endure (encephalitis – short-term memory loss), I feel like God has humbled me to a degree to appreciate what I have right now because you don’t really know what you’ve got until it’s gone. So with all things, continue to give thanks, praise God and remain humble. God uses everything to teach us to be more and more like Him in all that we do. He provides us with many examples and many teachers that we least expect to learn from in order for us to understand what it is like to have the “Mind of Christ”. If you think of Jesus, He hung out with everybody and anybody including those government officials and tax collectors that offended the masses that oppressed them through unjust laws and taxes that seemed to sponge off of the people. If Jesus were to walk around our lives today, contrary to popular opinions, I think He’d hang out with Donald Trump even if it offends the masses in some way as much as He would’ve hung out with a beggar in the street because Jesus’ love does not discriminate.
We as Christians need to understand that we need to deal with and confront our personal levels of PRIDE in order to remain humble and receive others that are different from ourselves. We cannot reach anyone that is different from us if we come off as prejudicial, judgemental and hypocritical in our conduct. “We are known to be Christians by our Love” demonstrated through our ACTIONS. If we want to have impact in other people’s lives, we first need to face the fact and decide to have an attitude adjustment about the way in which we treat people. Do our words match our actions? Are we all talk and no action? We need to make sure that how we conduct ourselves is representative of what we believe in because what we ultimately believe in, is what we become. I personally endeavor to become what My God wants me to become and that is to be more like His Son Jesus each and every day even if it means I’m guilty by association, Amen!
